Eugene Ballet Presents Swing Kings
Swing Kings is a tribute to the swing era of the 1940’s. This was a turbulent time in history with the rise of the Nazis party in Germany, the Second World War, the holocaust, Rosy the Riveter, great leaders Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin, the destruction of historic Japan, the atom bomb and the tremendous selfless giving of life by many brave young men and women. So it is all the more remarkable that this was a period in music and dance of such fertility. The era saw band leaders such as Glen Miller and Les Brown, and talented solo artist musicians such as clarinetist, Benny Goodman, trumpeter, Tommy Dorsey, percussionist, Gene Krupa and pianist Count Basie. It was also an opportunity for Eugene Ballet dancers to learn how to dance “swing” with some very fancy steps such as the Flying Lindy with Double Kicks, Double Hook, Charleston, Rubber Legs and Hurdle, get some airtime and swing their partner!
